More Yellow Box Cameras Coming to Orpington
New CCTV enforcement is being introduced at two yellow box junctions on Station Road, close to Orpington Station and the Maxwell pub.
Bromley Council has advised that cameras will enforce the yellow boxes at the junctions of Station Road/Tubbenden Lane and Station Road/Tower Road, with the stated aim of improving traffic flow and reducing congestion.
The existing yellow box markings will be refreshed where necessary and signs installed informing motorists that CCTV enforcement is in operation.
For the first 14 days of enforcement, motorists caught stopping unlawfully within the boxes will receive a warning rather than a financial penalty. After that period, Penalty Charge Notices will be issued.
“Pro-road safety, not anti-car”
The announcement comes only weeks after the local elections, when Conservative candidates in Petts Wood & Knoll specifically campaigned on a pledge to be:
“Pro-road safety, not anti-car.”
The introduction of additional camera enforcement so soon after that election has therefore raised questions about whether local policy matches the message voters were given during the campaign.
Ben Gulvin, Reform UK Orpington Lead, said:
“During the election, the Conservatives promised to be ‘pro-road safety, not anti-car.’ Yet once again, we’re seeing more CCTV/yellow box junction cameras, more enforcement and more fines for ordinary motorists.
“After ULEZ, Pay-Per-Mile arising and the ever-increasing cost of driving, many residents in Orpington and Petts Wood will understandably view this as another revenue-raising exercise.
“If Bromley Council is serious about improving traffic flow, it should focus on the issues that frustrate drivers every day: repairing potholes, maintaining our roads and addressing the root causes of congestion.
“And if this latest scheme really is about easing traffic rather than generating income, the Council should publish the evidence behind it, demonstrate how it will improve congestion, and be completely transparent about how every pound raised through enforcement will be spent. Residents deserve nothing less.”
Reform: End the war on motorists
Reform UK has consistently argued against policies which it believes unfairly penalise motorists.
Locally, Reform Orpington will continue to scrutinise measures affecting drivers and ask whether new enforcement is genuinely necessary to improve our roads or simply creates another opportunity to issue fines.
Motorists should not be treated as an easy source of revenue.
