Reform Unveils Plan for Affordable Social Housing for Working Britain

Reform UK has announced plans for a major overhaul of social housing, with a new system that would prioritise British workers, young families and veterans.

Deputy Leader Richard Tice set out the proposals on 25 August, arguing that Britain’s housing system is failing younger working people who increasingly struggle to afford a home of their own.

Priority for British Workers and Families

Under Reform UK’s proposals, British-born workers under the age of 35 would be moved towards the front of the social housing queue, with additional priority given to married couples with children and veterans.

The party also wants social housing to be more strongly focused on British nationals who are in work.

Reform says there are currently around 1.3 million households on social housing waiting lists, while approximately 540,000 social homes are occupied by foreign nationals.

The party has previously announced plans to remove foreign nationals from social housing following a grace period, which it says would release hundreds of thousands of properties for British citizens.

50,000 Affordable Homes a Year

Alongside changes to allocation, Reform has pledged to build 50,000 affordable social homes every year.

Tice said the programme would be designed to be fiscally neutral, without requiring additional taxation or government borrowing.

Reform would also introduce stricter standards for the maintenance of social housing and estates, including action against repeated breaches of tenancy conditions.

Helping the Next Generation

Announcing the policy, Richard Tice said too many young working people were being priced out of establishing independent lives and starting families.

“It is time for us to prioritise young British workers, and that is what our policy is about.”

Drawing on his previous career in property development, Tice said a Reform government would seek to remove barriers to housebuilding and increase the supply of affordable homes.

He added:

“Britain’s housing market is broken. Housing needs Reform.”

The announcement forms part of Reform UK’s developing programme ahead of the next General Election, with housing affordability and access to social housing set to be major areas of policy.
